During my
years at Edinburgh University as a Senior Administrator in Housing and
Student Affairs, I travelled extensively throughout the world, and particularly
in the United States. Having been elected to international posts, I have
represented Edinburgh University abroad, and attended many symposia and
conferences.
For eleven
years I was warden of one of Edinburgh University's last traditional Halls
of Residence. During that period I dealt with the entire spectrum of community
living and pastoral care in a Hall of Residence with a healthy mix of
faculty, nationality and academic year of study.
In the course of my career at the University of Edinburgh and in my travels
abroad many students, staff and parents outlined the difficulties and
anxieties of arriving in a foreign country, at an unfamiliar airport and
coping with that critical period of transition to a new environment and
culture.
